Chapter Nine

The Dark Room

The guards locked me into an adjacent room and left to make the arrangements to send me to the reeducation camp. The window had been boarded up, so there was hardly any light in there. I laid down on an old musty smelling couch and started crying again. I cried until there were no more tears left to shed.

I thought of the suffering inflicted upon the other girls brought to this room. They had to endure even worse abuse. They had no one to protect them; they were completely helpless. I was feeling the greatest hurt that I had ever experienced in my life. I hated those SS guards.

I heard something in the darkness. Some mice were scurrying across the room. I wished that I could see them. I liked watching mice. That made me think of the little mouse that ran along the pipes in the basement of the apartment during the first bombing raids.

So, I was to be sent to a Lebensborn facility against my wishes and forced to bear perfect Aryan children for the regime. This was unbelievable. Now they were discussing sending me to a detention camp where they could do whatever they wanted to me. I wondered if this had been their plan all along; it would not be surprising if coercion was now being practiced in this Lebesborn program, or in some perverse version of it on the street.

I could see that it was getting dark outside through a tiny gap in the boards covering the window. My family would be getting worried about me by now. They would have reported my disappearance to the city police and there would be a search conducted, and once they found that I was being detained by the SS, they would report this back to my family. At least they would know what was happening to me, but they would be extremely distraught to learn that I was in the custody of the SS.

I drifted off to sleep. I was now in a dream, flying over Neuss Schloss. I had dreams like this before where I was flying. My body was as light as a feather. I rose up over the ground and could see everything from above.

It was a beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky. I looked down from my perch on the third-floor window ledge of Neuss Schloss. What a wonderful panoramic view of the plaza and the grandiose building. So many windows; I wondered how many? One could not count them all. I saw all the people walking about on the plaza below. Women and children out for a day of leisure; others on their way to the downtown stores. Life seemed so peaceful and carefree. The panorama was breathtaking from here, and it was exhilarating to behold this wonderful moment when life was so abundant and full of promise. I had a feeling that something bad was about to happen to this lovely building.

I was jolted awake by explosions rocking the factory building.
